Top Gear fic; "A Moment in Time"
Title: A Moment in Time
Author: Emmy, aka lastinthebox
Pairing: Richard/Stig,
Rating: PG-13
Length: 350
Warnings: Human Stig, possible character death.
Summary: The day The Stig falls from grace.
Disclaimer: This story is fictional, completely fictional.
Author Notes: I haven’t written any Top Gear fic in a hot minute, and this little idea came to mind while I was watching OZ last night. Yeah, I know, weird.

A moment in time

There’s a moment in time when The Stig becomes a man. A living, breathing human being. No longer is he an extraterrestrial legend from another world, from another galaxy, an extraordinary prodigy from the outer reaches of the universe where Earth’s technolgies and sciences can, and will likely never access.

No, The Stig is a man with a single beating heart, a smug grin, and a receding hairline. Pays the bills on time, sips from a cup of coffee as the sun rises over the city, watches the eleven o’clock news when he’s home. The Stig has a name, a family, and a bathroom sink to brush his teeth in.

So the day he falls from grace is when a black 2011 Chevrolet Camaro with white racing stripes skids off the track at speeds of over a hundred miles an hour and slams into a cement barrier. The day he no longer is The Stig is when he can barely hear the sirens whirring closer and closer over the sound of the accordioned car settling against the asphalt, the dash and wheel pinning him against the seat with such a pressure he could never fathom.

He feels like a failure when the firefighters pry open the door and cut away at the twist of plastic and metal binding him into his place, feels like screaming when the paramedics fit him with a C-Collar, pull him from the vehicle.

He feels a sharp prick and an intense cold spreading up his arm on the way to the hospital. His vision goes dark. His head feels light. And then he feels nothing, for a long, long while.

*

Richard gets the call at 09.07.

He’s on the phone with Jeremy for less the minute before he ends the call. He sets his piece of buttered toast back on the plate, pushes himself away from the table, tucks his chair back in, grabs his keys, kisses his wife, and calmly walks out the door.

Walks to his car in the driveway. Gets in. Rests his forehead on the steering wheel, and he mourns.

Oh, I usually avoid character death like the plague, but I completely missed the warning simply because your first line was so intriguing! Which is okay, really, because this was a great read anyway. :)

For some reason I really liked how you described The Stig as having a receding hairline -- probably because it was unexpected. A single beating heart, and especially the smug smile I could have imagined, but the receding hairline really came at me from out of nowhere, and for that reason, it grabbed me as a reader. :) Though maybe that's just me, I don't know, lol.

Either way, good job on this ficlet!

Ooh, this is really interesting. I love the receding hairline and the bathroom sink. You say a lot with a little here, which I really admire.

So few words, but so powerful. I'll never see the Stig in the same way again... and I thank you for that.

Poor Stig... poor Richard. :'(

Not nearly enough human!Stig fic out there, let alone from someone with a Ben Collins icon!

And from someone else who's written Ben/Rich (and Ben/James as well) I say, BRAVO.
